Chris Naegel is experiencing severe Monday depression.
On Monday in Washington, Michigan's The Orchards, the 39-year-old journeyman earned a spot in his fifth PGA Tour tournament, this week's Rocket Mortgage Classic. Naegel tied Luke Guthrie for the top round with a 6-under 66 and earned one of the four Monday qualifying places for the RMC, which gets Thursday underway at Detroit Golf Club.
In addition to qualifying for the 3M Open, Barracuda Championship, and John Deere Classic in July, Naegel had four successful Monday bids. He qualified for the U.S. Open last month by playing in the final qualifying, where he placed T-56.
Naegel had only played in four PGA Tour events before this one, including the Shinnecock Hills 2018 U.S. Open, where he tied for 56th. Despite not having status, he has participated in several seasons of the Korn Ferry Tour. However, he can enter the KFT Finals this year via the non-member FedExCup points list.
Naegel holds 52 non-member points when he joins the RMC. Naegel must finish higher on the FedExCup points list than No. 200 to be eligible for the KFT Finals, where 25 PGA Tour cards will be up for grabs for the last time. Jimmy Walker presently holds that position with 83 points. A former college teammate of Collin Morikawa's, K.K. Limbhasut, and Erik Flores advanced from the Monday qualifier at The Orchards.
