Players who have been penalised by the PGA Tour for participating in the first LIV Golf event will be permitted to play in next month's Open Championship, according to a statement released by the R&A on Wednesday.
R&A chief executive Martin Slumbers said, "Players who are exempt or have earned a place by qualifying for The 150th Open in conformity with the entry terms and conditions will be eligible to compete in the event at St Andrew's."
Similar decisions were made by the USGA for the U.S. Open last week, noting the date of the inaugural LIV competition.
Following the first LIV event in London, the Tour indefinitely suspended 17 players. Since then, additional well-known athletes have switched to the Saudi-sponsored circuit, including Bryson DeChambeau, Patrick Reed, and Abraham Ancer.
PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan reaffirmed the Tour's position during a players' meeting on Tuesday at the Travelers Championship, saying anyone who disobeys the rules and competes in LIV events will not be allowed to rejoin the Tour.
the following week is the LIV event in Portland, Oregon.
