Garoppolo and the Rams
Sunday Splash time has arrived. Scooptown residents, go in the pool with your asses on.
Here's one about which I'm, to put it mildly, skeptical. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN.com, the Rams "were lurking as a possible destination" for quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo if the 49ers had dismissed him.
Garoppolo and the Rams "had the makings of a deal," according to Schefter. If this assertion accurately describes the circumstances, it suggests that tampering may have taken place. Although Garoppolo was permitted to shop in trade, neither the Rams nor his agent was authorized to prepare contract proposals contingent on Garoppolo being released. (Wild hunch: That comment will be smoothed out in the story by noon ET.)
It would have been a Rams move, and they could have gotten Garoppolo without using their catchphrase "screw those picks."
Matthew Stafford has experienced
What the report doesn't make clear is as follows. Before opting to keep Garoppolo, were the 49ers aware of the possibilities? Did the chance of Garoppolo doing it have any bearing on their decision?
Would Garoppolo have carried it out as well? Perhaps a different group offered more. He might have had a more straightforward path to playing in 2022 with a different team.
Recall that he claimed he dislikes raising eyebrows. There would have been considerable controversy if I had joined the Rams.
Given the elbow problems starter, Matthew Stafford has experienced, the idea is not outlandish. Given the chance that Stafford's elbow could eventually cause him to be sidelined, we recently mentioned that the Rams might be interested in Garoppolo. Compared to John Wolford (checks notes), Garoppolo would be in a far better position to win games.
Opening Sunday
All of it is irrelevant at this time. And the only reason it's news right now is that it's the opening Sunday of the regular season when all NFL insiders must conjure up a story that will please their friends, foes, and impartial observers—but, more crucially, those who are paying them.
