Robert Gamez memorably defeated Greg Norman on the last hole of the 1990 Nestle Invitational at Bay Hill Club and Lodge by sinking a 7-iron. More than three decades later, Orlando, Florida resident Gamez, 54, was detained in the Bay Hill district on suspicion of criminal violence.
Gamez, a three-time champion on the PGA Tour, was arrested and later released from the Orange County Jail after police said that he inappropriately handled a female victim who was not named before fighting with another individual. Golfweek originally covered the news of the arrest and its specifics.
According to the police report, Gamez is accused of touching the female's buttocks last Saturday night during a pool party in the 5600 block of Masters Boulevard after grabbing the victim's top earlier in the evening and exposing her. Gamez is alleged to have been caught around the neck by a second witness after that. Gamez is then stated to have fallen to the ground and suffered injuries, necessitating admission to Dr. Phillips Hospital.
Gamez was drunk and lying on a medical stretcher when cops arrived on the scene. The former Tour professional admitted to the police that he had no memories.
Gamez was taken into custody the same day he was released from the hospital on Sunday morning.
