CROMWELL Conn.: Rory McIlroy currently seems to be unstoppable.
McIlroy shot a bogey-free 8-under 62 to seize the early lead at the Travelers Championship despite having sinus troubles and making his fourth straight start. McIlroy is back in the mix again.
McIlroy admitted that he didn't hit any golf balls on Monday or Tuesday after his round. "I flew down to Florida for a day, stayed in my bed, came back up Tuesday, didn't come to the course, and then yesterday playing the pro-am in the rain wasn't great preparation, but I feel — I played well at Brookline," the golfer said. In two days, I won't go crazy. I had a strategy.
In his last six starts, McIlroy has finished second at the Masters, fifth at the Wells Fargo Championship, eighth at the PGA Championship, T-18 at the Memorial, first at the RBC Canadian Open, and T-5 last week at the U.S. Open. This is his highest standing in two years.
McIlroy believed TPC River Highlands was the ideal location to end his hot streak before putting his clubs down for a while after a month of nonstop golf and coming off the sport's toughest test, the U.S. Open.
Coming here is like U.S. Open rehab, he remarked. "Oh, I can truly make some birdies, you think.
I like this. I enjoy visiting this place the week following the U.S. Open. It provides you the chance to shoot low scores and push forward, which is nice."
The Northern Irishman and J.T. Poston, who shot 62 in the afternoon, shared the lead at the end of the day.
At seven-under, Xander Schauffele and Martin Laird are one back. At six under par, Patrick Cantlay is in a group.
Because his daughter Poppy "brought something home from daycare last week," McIlroy is sick. He will press through and give it his all as he attempts to add a 22nd PGA Tour triumph to his resume before some downtime at TPC River Highlands with three more holes remaining.
At this point, he added, "I think energy levels are okay." "Before I take a few weeks off to rest and prepare for the Open Championship, I have three more rounds to play. I'm going to give those three rounds my all."
