Sam Darnold was selected second overall in 2018 overall behind Baker Mayfield
Sam Darnold, who was selected second overall in 2018 overall behind Baker Mayfield, is once again a quarterback behind Mayfield this season.
For Monday's season-opening game against the Browns, the Panthers formally selected Mayfield as their starting quarterback. Since the Panthers already knew what they had in Darnold, many believed that the Panthers' deal for Mayfield before training camp indicated that he would win the job.
During a press conference on Monday, Darnold claimed he didn't believe the competition was biassed in Mayfield's favour. He continued by saying that while the result "sucks" for him, he is committed to doing all in his power to support Mayfield's success.
Coach selected Baker as the starter
"We were fighting for the entry-level position. Throughout camp, every day was a game day, especially as the last few weeks approached. Things didn't work out for me. Coach selected Baker as the starter. It is what it is, in my opinion. I'm going to support Baker right now and help him prepare for a game by doing whatever I can.
As a result of the Panthers activating his fifth-year option, Darnold has a contract guarantee of over $18 million for this season. Still, as long as Mayfield is healthy and performing well, he will collect those paychecks from the sidelines.
