Boxing continues to deliver some big moments and fights in 2022. After a solid start for the year, things drastically improved over the spring, and the sport is now heading into a long stretch loaded with big fights almost every week.
The year has seen a significant moment. The three boxing's of four world championships at welterweight by Jr. dominating Yordenis Ugas.
Tyson Fury recently returned to the ring for what could be the last time he knocked out Dillian Whyte in London.
However, the biggest of all may have occurred in May, when Canelo Alvarez failed in his bid to become the WBA light heavyweight champion against Dmitry Bivol. The undisputed super-middleweight champion could not present much of a challenge to the Russian champion, as he landed a career-low in punches over 12 rounds. It does not confirm the next step, Alvarez.
Jermell Charlo then became the seventh male boxer to unify all four recognized titles in one division when he knocked out Brian Castano in their rematch at junior middleweight. Charlo stopped every one of his opponents in his quest to win all four titles. Also, Gervonta "Tank" Davis put an exclamation point on his feud with Rolando Romero when he stopped his sixth round at Barclays Center.
As we head into the summer months, beginning in June, the lightweight title will be on the line undisputed in Australia when George Kambosos Jr. takes on Devin Haney. Kambosos Jr. shocked the world by defeating Teofimo Lopez Jr. for all four recognized titles last year by decision. Meanwhile, Haney holds the WBC secondary crown and has been nearly perfect every outing. However, this fight has an added problem, as in 1992, Haney's father and trainer could not travel due to a felony.
Then just three days later, the unified bantamweight titles are on the line in Japan as Naoya Inoue takes on Nonito Donaire. The pair engaged in an incredible battle in a 2019 Fight of the Year contender after Donaire recovered from being knocked down to break Inoue's orbital bone late. Inoue emerged victorious, but now he must once again prove himself.
