Award Gilchrist is respected to be driving Scotland on what he hopes to be an "extraordinary" summer visit to South America.
The 31-year-old Edinburgh lock has been named chief for the drawn-out excursion to Chile and Argentina without any ordinary captain Stuart Hogg. He has been excluded from recovering following a chaotic timetable.
Gilchrist has driven the public group on past events and is glad to have been chosen as the crew's nonentity for what he expects will be a good time for the group holding in front of the following year's World Cup.
"It's an enormous honour," he said. "I love playing for Scotland.
"To be approached to chief my country in the past was the apex, and this is right up there. It's challenging for the group and me to go down to South America for four defining moments.
"I'm an accomplished player. I've played for a couple of years, so something usually comes to me.
"We have an incredible gathering of folks who will uphold me. It won't be about me; it will be about initiative throughout the group.
"You don't regularly get the potential chance to burn through four weeks in a row collectively to bond and get that association. That is the explanation it will be exceptional. Building connections and associations with one another can help the exhibition on the pitch."
Gilchrist was essential for the Scotland group that finished the 2018 summer visit with a 44-15 triumph over Argentina in Resistencia.
This time they will confront the Pumas multiple times on back-to-back ends of the week following next Saturday's 'A' group match against Chile.
The captain is excited about getting back to a hardliner rugby country.
"I have positive recollections of playing in Argentina," he said. "I adored the antagonistic climate; they're extreme and physical.
"They're an enthusiastic rugby-supporting country and that sensation of playing in those cold conditions, and it is truly exceptional to get success.
"We had an extraordinary outcome of them in 2018, yet they were of an injured creature then. They're a significantly improved side at this point.
"We need to win this three-Test series. I've never been essential for a three-Test series. It's genuinely thrilling playing against a top-quality group in an unfriendly climate. What a test.
"If we can win a three-Test series in Argentina, that will be a major proclamation from us in front of the harvest time Tests, then heading into the Six Nations and the World Cup. This is critical for us to get heading on the correct path."
