Sergio Garcia would like to retract his earlier statements; after all, he has no plans to leave the Ryder Cup or the DP World Tour. In any case, not yet.
After The Open at St. Andrews, Garcia confided in Spanish reporters that he "would probably leave" the European circuit since he didn't feel supported by the DPWT and his fellow players, a move that would eliminate him from future Ryder Cup teams.
At the time, Garcia was reported to have said, "I've devoted more than half my life to the European Tour, and I want to continue playing there, but I won't play where they don't want me.".
Garcia has since had a change of heart. Garcia said in an interview with ESPN.com's Michael Collins on Monday that while he intends to keep competing in LIV Golf tournaments, he also recently informed DPWT CEO Keith Pelley that he wants to keep competing in the DPWT, complete his required number of events, and hopefully make the European Ryder Cup team for the following year. Garcia quotes Pelley saying, "That's terrific, but we must do what's best for us. We'll check that out.
Garcia said recent remarks by fellow Spaniard Jon Rahm, who stated it "bothers" him that Garcia might not be able to compete in the Ryder Cup. Discussions with other DPWT players have convinced him that, despite his initial fears, he is not as unloved as he initially believed.
Garcia declared, "I'm going to delay [resigning from DPWT membership]." "I want to observe at least what transpires when Ryder Cup qualification starts and what kinds of rules and specifications are in place... I'll continue playing on tour as much as possible and attempt to make that Ryder Cup team if I agree with what they're saying. If not, we'll continue. However, it is undoubtedly an issue on my mind.
