The 2018 U.S. Amateur, underway Monday at Ridgewood Country Club, continues the USGA's tradition of innovative groupings. The stroke-play trio of Campbell Kremer of Louisville, Kentucky, Hazen Newman of Las Vegas, and Mark Costanza of Morristown, New Jersey, is the best example.
Get it? George Costanza, Cosmo Kramer, and Newman, the primary characters from "Seinfeld," are the antagonists.
Among the group's members is Costanza. The 33-year-old investment banker, born close to Ridgewood, has won the Met Golf Association Player of the Year award twice. At the 2017 U.S. Mid-Amateur, he finished second to Stewart Hagestad.
At Oklahoma State, Newman is a rising senior, and at Kentucky, Kremer is a rising junior. Justin Thomas and Kremer both went to St. Xavier High School in Louisville.
World record-holders include Gordon Sargent (4), Michael Thorbjornsen (4), and Ludvig Aberg (2 in WAGR) (6)
Wenyi Ding (6'4"), Stewart Hagestad (6'5"), and Davis Womble (6'6") are the "Tall Guys."
Weekend competitors for the 2022 U.S. Open are Sam Bennett, Austin Greaser, and Travis Vick (low am).
David Ford (Southern American), Luke Clanton (North and South American), and William Mouw were the summer champions (Trans-Miss Am)
Caleb Surratt, Jiri Zuska, and Bryce Lewis are the top three players in the Elite Amateur Golf Series (3)
