Boston, Massachusetts Dustin Johnson
has escaped criticism this week at the U.S. Open, while Phil Mickelson, the most prominent PGA Tour defector, has been the center of attention.
Johnson did not hold a pre-tournament press conference at The Country Club, and even after a first-round score of 68 made him only two shots off the lead, he did not speak to the media. Johnson, a former PGA Tour member, has resigned and committed to competing in the LIV Golf series for the next four years.
On Friday, that changed.
Johnson acknowledged that his choice was difficult but expressed his confidence in it. Undoubtedly, I'm pleased and eagerly anticipating this weekend and the remaining events this year.
The 2016 U.S. Open champion Johnson, four strokes behind the clubhouse lead at 1-over 141, appeared unconcerned at any about the uproar that his and other defections have caused.
