Sophia Schubert wasted no time in expressing her feelings to the media.
She admitted a potentially life-changing major triumph at the Amundi Evian Championship shortly after missing out on Sunday. Brooke Henderson won the tournament after making a 12-foot birdie putt on the last hole to finish at 17 under par, one shot ahead of Schubert.
Since Schubert graduated from Texas in 2018, a year after winning the U.S. Women's Amateur, her professional career hasn't seen many of these joyful occasions. Later following year at Q-School, she obtained her Epson Tour card, but in just two seasons, she garnered just over $28,000 in prize money.
At the beginning of this season, Schubert wrote for LPGA.com, "It was hard to find my groove between a global epidemic and irregular confidence highs and lows."
Schubert accepted a position working for Golf Channel during the U.S. Women's Amateur in 2020, giving the impression that she was considering a career outside of competitive golf. Schubert, though, believes that it revitalized her performance.
Schubert said, "Karen [Stupples] reminded me that it's 'simply golf,' the same golf I've played my entire life. "I needed to hear that, you know. It was different to watch the game and make comments about it. As a result, I became considerably more deliberate in my thought processes and shot selections. Though it did, I would never have anticipated that this chance would boost my performance.
In 2021, Schubert succeeded on the Epson Tour and converted it into an LPGA card. Although she had made 11 starts before the Evian and had no top-10 finishes, Schubert didn't lose faith in her. "I have a lot of support at home, and they keep reminding me, 'You can do this,'" Schubert remarked. Just be assured."
Recently, she also changed the lofts and lay on her clubs, which straightened out her ball-striking and provided her the assurance to compete with the greatest LPGA players.
Schubert played flawless golf down the stretch to secure what appeared to be a berth in a playoff on Sunday. She had just two bogeys and two doubles all week. At the par-5 18th hole, Schubert had missed a short birdie putt, but Henderson was in a group behind her and appeared to be making par at most.
I was a little more anxious than yesterday, and Brittany kept telling me to take a deep breath. It's OK. Continue doing what you're doing," Schubert urged. "I suppose the last few holes were coming in, and I felt like I just struck every shot and kept playing because I felt at ease, the golfer stated.
Henderson was able to rally, sink the go-ahead birdie putt, and dash Schubert's hopes of winning in a playoff or outright.
Before this week, Schubert, who had never finished in the top 50 of significant competition and had been just outside the top 300 of the Rolex Rankings, was happy to have had the chance.
Schubert said of trying to win a significant title, "It was something I always wanted. "I knew I could make it there. A bit of uncertainty existed, but I couldn't be in better company.
Schubert would re-join that group if Sunday indicated what lies ahead.
