Buffalo against the Rams
It was the best possible start for Von Miller with the Bills. The edge rusher had an outstanding season debut for Buffalo against the Rams, recording four tackles, two sacks, and three tackles for loss.
As soon as this happened, Cowboys' Twitter went into overdrive, reflecting on the possibilities.
The Cowboys expressed interest in Miller after losing edge rusher Randy Gregory to free agency this spring. Miller was an avid Cowboys supporter growing up in DeSoto, a Dallas suburb located 25 miles from AT&T Stadium.
According to Miller, he would be open to giving the Cowboys a "hometown discount." However, it was said that the Cowboys extended to him the same five-year, $70 million contract with two guaranteed years as they did to Gregory.
The Rams also made Miller, 33, a two-year deal with a guarantee
He signed a six-year, $120 million contract with the Bills that includes $51.4 million in guaranteed money over the first three years.
After witnessing what Miller did Thursday night, Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones was questioned on Friday about if he had any regrets.
Cowboys added free agent Dante Fowler
Via Mark Lane of WFAA, Jones stated on 105.3 The Fan that Von Miller is a fantastic football player. There are many schools of thought on older guys like that. When you get those guys are for more so for the playoffs than it is for the first half, middle of the season, but you see them play at that level, especially this early. Granted, playing for the Rams and winning a Super Bowl must have given Von some extra reason to put himself on display. There are many players for whom you might take action if there was infinite cap room, but that wasn't a short-term, one-year deal. It was a long-term agreement, so we had to consider what we were doing now and what will happen here in the next year or two. There, we just made a conscious decision to go on the chosen course.
Miller has 117.5 career sacks and has won Super Bowl rings with the Rams and the Broncos. That places them #1 among active players and in the top 31 in NFL history.
Instead, the Cowboys added free agent Dante Fowler, who will serve as Dorance Armstrong's backup opposite DeMarcus Lawrence. Armstrong, Fowler, and Lawrence have combined for 91 sacks in their careers, but linebacker Micah Parsons, named the NFL's defensive rookie of the year, had 13 sacks in 2017.
