Swiatek tops Pegula; faces Sabalenka in US Open semifinals
Swiatek defeats Pegula and advances to the semifinals of the US Open.
THE NEW YORK Red clay courts, where Iga Swiatek has won both of her Grand Slam titles thus far, are where her game is most proficient and where her mind is most at ease.
However, she certainly appears to be catching on to the hard-court thing at the U.S. Open.
The No. 1-ranked Swiatek defeated American Jessica Pegula 6-3, 7-6 (4) on Wednesday night in a match that featured a total of 13 service breaks, including 10 in the second set alone. This victory put Swiatek into her first semifinal at Flushing Meadows.
Two times, at 5-4 and 6-5, Swiatek, a 21-year-old Pole who previously won the French Open in 2020 and this June, failed to serve out the victory. Though she performed better in the tiebreaker, Swiatek ran toward her guest box, threw her white racket away, and yelled when No. 8 seed Pegula missed a backhand.
On Thursday, the No. 6 seed Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus will now be Swiatek's opponent in the semifinals. The other semifinal matchup pits No. 5 Ons Jabeur against No. 17 Caroline Garcia, who on Tuesday ousted American teenager Coco Gauff.
Only Swiatek has won a major championship out of the four players still in the bracket. And only Sabalenka has ever advanced this far in New York; she lost in the semifinals the previous year. On Wednesday, Sabalenka defeated two-time Slam runner-up Karolina Pliskova 6-1, 7-6 (4).
