Taylor Montgomery took no chances this time after doing the inconceivable a year earlier negatively.
After finishing tied for second on Sunday at the Price Cutter Charity Championship on the Korn Ferry Tour, Montgomery declared, "No longer the bubble boy this year."
Montgomery's PGA Tour card was assured by his co-runner-up position because, at No. 7 in KFT points, he has now surpassed the fail-safe level and is, therefore, sure to place in the top 25 when the regular season concludes in Omaha the following month.
Montgomery unexpectedly placed one position outside the top-25 cutoff for Tour cards for the regular season and KFT Finals the previous season. Montgomery missed the cut at both the Korn Ferry Tour Championship and Omaha, the final event of the regular season, adding salt to both wounds. Every time, he waited two days before finding out that he was the first man out.
Montgomery admitted, "I didn't even really see it, especially the second time. It isn't easy to finish 26th twice, so I didn't think I could.
In addition to earning his Tour card, Montgomery also qualified for the U.S. Open for the second year. He was denied a KFT start last year due to his poor performance at the U.S. Open.
Montgomery, however, should not be concerned about points this time. He can anticipate hearing his name called and scheduling an appearance on that occasion.
