THE NEW YORK According to officials, former NBA player Terrence Williams has admitted to conspiring to commit identity theft and health care fraud in conjunction with a multimillion-dollar scam against the health plan of the basketball league.
A federal court in Manhattan
Williams, 35, pleaded guilty on Friday in federal court in Manhattan. The maximum punishment for the conspiracy charge against him is 20 years in prison, while the minimum sentence for the identity theft offense is two years. His sentencing is set for January.
He received an email asking for comment from his lawyer.
Williams was charged
Williams was charged with being the conspiracy's mastermind, which involved submitting false documentation and claims to the league's medical and dental compensation program.

Authorities claimed that at least $5 million in erroneous claims were submitted to the plan between 2017 and 2021, and he and 17 other former players were indicted in an indictment in October 2021.

According to the authorities, the former athlete had been out on pretrial release but was taken back into custody earlier this year after a witness had allegedly been threatened.
Williams will lose more than $650,000 to the federal government and pay $2.5 million in restitution to the plan as part of the plea agreement.
