A compelling matchup attracts viewers. They stick around if the game is good.
According to Austin Karp of Sports Business Journal, the Bills' rout of the Rams on Thursday night had an average audience of slightly over 21 million viewers.
That represents a decline of almost 20% from the 26 million viewers who tuned in to watch the Cowboys-Buccaneers kickoff game last season.
Texans at Chiefs attracted 21.6 million viewers.
In 2020, the Texans at Chiefs attracted 21.6 million viewers, and the Packers at Bears in 2019, 22.7 million.
The figure from last night is the lowest since 2018 when 19.6 million people watched the Falcons vs. Eagles game on television.
The Cowboys and Buccaneers will kick off the season in prime time this year. It will be interesting to see if the viewership equals or exceeds the 26 million from the previous year.
