Dak Prescott suffered a significant hand injury.
The Buccaneers had their appearance. The Cowboys appeared destined for another season without a Super Bowl appearance, particularly if Dak Prescott suffered a significant hand injury.
Tampa Bay opened the season at AT&T Stadium with a 19-3 victory led by Tom Brady. Brady completed 18 of his 27 passes for 212 yards, one score, and one interception.
It would have been a rout without Micah Parsons' two third-down sacks in the end zone and some Buccaneer's errors that resulted in field goals rather than touchdowns. On five drives during the first half, Tampa Bay reached Dallas 25, 20, 8, 4, and 29. Ryan Succop missed one field goal, but they made four field goals overall.
Thanks to Succop's field goals of 44, 38, 29, and 47, the Bucs lead 12-3 at the break.
The two sacks by Parsons occurred in third-down situations in the red zone, and one of them caused left tackle Donovan Smith to suffer an elbow injury.
With only 243 yards gained, Prescott and the Cowboys could not produce enough offense to keep up with the Buccaneers.
With 6:02 left in the game and the Cowboys behind 19-3, Prescott nevertheless continued to play. Shaquil Barrett, a Buccaneer's edge rusher, made contact with his throwing hand as he followed through.
Cooper Rush took over.
Prescott was evaluated by Dr. Dan Cooper, the team's head physician, and then left the game to the training room.
Before Cooper Rush took over, Prescott ended 14 of 29 for 134 yards and an interception. In addition to Ezekiel Elliott's 52 yards of rushing on ten carries, CeeDee Lamb only managed two receptions on 11 targets for 29 yards, and correct tackle Terence Steele committed four penalties.
