HEIGHTSBURG, N.C. Concerning an intoxicated driving incident involving a teammate and the grandson of now-retired Blue Devils coach Mike Krzyzewski, prosecutors have dropped a misdemeanor case against a former Duke player and No. 1 overall NBA lottery selection Paolo Banchero.
On Friday, the Raleigh News & Observer reported that Banchero had his November tickets thrown out for promoting drunk driving.
In a plea deal that includes community service and probation, the newspaper claimed that Michael Savarino, Krzyzewski's grandson and a reserve for Duke last season, admitted to driving while intoxicated on Wednesday.
According to authorities, Savarino was operating a Jeep that belonged to Banchero while Banchero was seated in the rear.
As a result of last month's draft, Banchero, who the Orlando Magic selected, was charged with encouraging drunk driving.
It's "not rare for a person charged with aiding and abetting DWI to have his or her case dropped upon the resolution of the principal's DWI," Orange County assistant district attorney Maren Hardin told the newspaper in an email.
The Associated Press emailed Hardin on Friday, but he didn't reply. The transfer of Savarino to New York University.
