The shocking revelation that Dolphins owner Stephen Ross would only be suspended for tampering—which he did—rather than tanking—which he also attempted to do—pushed the Deshaun Watson case out of the headlines for at least a day. It won't be forgotten for very long.
The appeal from the NFL is shortly due. The opportunity for the NFL to appeal Judge Sue L. Robinson's ruling to the NFL is quickly running out, and there is no information or proof that there have been any conversations with the NFL Players Association to possibly extend the deadline (an extension is allowed, provided the parties agree).
The league has three business days per regulation to submit the appeal. It's unclear if it refers to the closing of business on the third business day following the day Judge Robinson informed the parties of her judgment or 72 hours from that point. Knowing all potential deadlines and meeting the earliest one, just in case, is part of reasonable legal practice.
In this instance, it would even make sense to file the appeal today to avoid any potential claims that today is now the third business day and Monday was the first because the decision was made before the start of NFL business on Monday.
That probably wouldn't be a compelling argument, but why take a chance? If an appeal is expected, the league should file it as soon as possible, preferably by Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. ET.
