Tennessee's MEMPHIS - The PGA Tour's revised playoff point system was designed to make the postseason more unpredictable. The FedEx St. Jude Championship's leaderboard and projections show that the plan was successful after three rounds.
Five golfers have a chance to move up the rankings and secure a berth in the BMW Championship the following week. After beginning the week outside of that cutoff, Tyler Duncan, Wyndham Clark, Andrew Putnam, Hayden Buckley, and Adam Scott are all predicted to finish in the top 70.
After beginning the week 118th on the playoff points list, Duncan is now in charge of the group. He is predicted to drop to 57th and is tied for sixth. Clark and Scott are tied for the 25th, and Putnam and Buckley are tied for the eighth.
Brendon Todd, tied for 52nd and expected to fall to 74th on the points list, is one of five players expected to tumble out of the top 70. At TPC Southwind, Alex Smalley, Anirban Lahiri, and John Huh all failed to cut and are expected to fall below the top 70, while Lanto Griffin will be absent from the playoffs due to an injury.
Ryan Palmer, who started the postseason 112th on the points list and is presently expected to finish 71st, is just on the edge of the playoff bubble.
The CJ Cup and invitationals are ample benefits of finishing in the top 70. Palmer added that the updated global ranking method is significant because it adds even more points," Palmer added. "There's always somewhere to go up and something to play for, and that's what I enjoy about what we do out here. The PGA Tour is advantageous because there is somewhere to go. We don't only play for the money.
