The United States was eliminated from medal contention in the Olympic women's rugby event after losing 21-12 to Great Britain in the quarterfinal round.
For the second consecutive Olympics, the United States' women's team has been ousted in the quarterfinals. The United States was widely considered a medal contender in the second edition of rugby sevens at the Olympics.
With a pair of tires by Jasmine Joyce and Abby Brown in the opening three minutes, Great Britain punched the United States in the mouth. The women's Eagles could not get close to the men's Eagles. With barely 90 seconds left in the first half, they were behind 14-0 for the first time.
The United States was given the ball to begin the second half, but they could not get it out of their half. Joyce dusted Kristi Kirche after a turnover to score Great Britain's third try and increase the lead to 21-0.
With 2:30 left in the game, the Americans marched down the field for a Kirche try, but Nicole Heavirland failed to convert, ultimately ending any American hopes of a comeback.
Although Naya Tapper scored at the buzzer to make the score more acceptable, Great Britain won and advanced to the semifinals.
