BOX SCORE
In a quarterfinal round loss to Great Britain on Tuesday, the American men's rugby team's dreams of winning an Olympic gold were abruptly and tragically dashed.
The U.S. Eagles squandered away a 21-0 advantage after the first seven minutes, and the British came back to win 26-21 when the Americans were briefly reduced to six men due to Stephen Tomasin's yellow card.
The United States outpaced and outmuscled Great Britain for almost the entire first half.
Within the first two minutes, Danny Barrett scored a try for the Eagles, while Perry Baker added two more scores of his own.
With an Ollie Lindsay-Hague try in the penultimate play of the first half, Great Britain managed to regain some of its previous momenta.
Tomasin's punishment sent Great Britain into full assault mode in the second half. In just three and a half minutes, they scored three tries to take the lead and move to the semifinals, where they will take on New Zealand.
The Olympic competition for the United States has not yet ended. In a consolation game on Wednesday, they face Canada to determine the final positions.
New Zealand defeated Canada 21-10, Argentina overcame South Africa 19-14, and Fiji blanked Australia 19-0 in the remaining quarterfinal matchups.
