Manchester City, a chosen club of the season ahead of Liverpool and Real Mad
Karim Benzema has been awarded the Ballon d'Or at the France Football gala held this Monday in Paris. "It's a child's dream that has come true; it's a perfect night," said the 34-year-old striker, who stands as the best footballer in the world after winning the league and the Champions League last season with Real Madrid. The Frenchman was key, scoring 44 goals in all competitions. The French footballer's award joins Alexia Putellas, who was awarded her second Ballon nonconsecutive.
"When I broke my knee in July, I thought this would not be possible," said the Barcelona player, who adds a new award and becomes the first Spanish man or woman to win the trophy twice, breaking the tie with Luis Suarez, the only one who had won it (in 1960) until the arrival of Putellas. Although the midfielder is injured, recovering from torn ligaments that deprived her of last summer's European Championship, her figures with Barcelona leave no room for doubt.
Thirty-three goals and 18 assists in all competitions with her club, the league's winner and the Champions' finalist. At the gala held in Paris, two other Barcelona players were awarded.
Gavi won the Kopa trophy as the best young footballer, and Robert Lewandowski added a new Gerd Muller award for the best scorer last season. Thibaut Courtois has been awarded the Yashin trophy as the best goalkeeper in the world.
This was the live broadcast of the Ballon d'Or Award gala. Spanish football was the great champion of the night. Karim Benzema has won the Ballon d'Or, and Thibaut Courtois has won the award for best goalkeeper in the world, two for Real Madrid. Gavi and Lewandowski, from Barcelona, have won the awards for best young footballer and best goalscorer. In contrast, Alexia Putellas, a Barcelona player, has won the Ballon d'Or for the second consecutive year.
Alexia Putellas: the gold of Spanish football
Alexia Putellas is synonymous with gold. Suarez remains the Spaniard who has stood on the Ballon d'Or podium most often, chosen among the three best footballers in the world on four occasions. Xavi Hernández, the now Barcelona coach, was chosen more times than Alexia in the top 3, but all three of his awards were Bronze.
Benzema, a bar of gold to the persistence
Karim Benzema followed her and got her. Real Madrid's French striker has been proclaimed the best footballer in the world with his first Golden Ball, awarded this Monday in Paris. There has been no discussion of the merits of the Frenchman, who had never finished in the top three of the France Football rankings.
Alexia Putellas with her second Ballon d'Or
The Barcelona midfielder has won her second consecutive Ballon d'Or. She is also the first player to win more than one award.
Alexia Putellas is Gold
Alexia Putellas is already much more than the best player in the world. An unprecedented achievement in women's football extends to Spain: no one had won the France Football magazine award twice after Luis Suárez lifted it in 1960 and won the Silver Ball twice (1961 and 1964), plus the Bronze in who work at the club.
