This Thursday, the 122nd edition of the US Open will kick off at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts. The 'major' will have a controversial tint due to the start of LIV Golf. This Saudi circuit attracted figures of the stature of Phil Mickelson, Patrick Reed, Bryson DeChambeau and Sergio Garcia, who will not be able to compete due to PGA Tour sanctions.
This will be the fourth edition of the US Open that this legendary course will host. The first was in 1913, and the winner was Francis Ouimet, totalling +12. Fifty years later, the major tournament returned to Brookline to crown Julius Boros (+9). Finally, in 1988 Curtis Strange beat Nick Faldo in a playoff to lift his first major, which he managed to defend the following year.
Jon Rahm arrives as one of the great favourites for the title, as he is the defending champion of this tournament. However, he will have to fight against Brooks Koepka (two-time winner of the US Open), Scottie Scheffler (number one in the world), and Justin Thomas (new champion of the PGA Championship), among others.
Sebastián Munoz, who finished as the best Latin American in the Canadian Open, will play his third US Open. In 2020 he got his best result, ranking 59th; in 2021, he did not pass the qualifying cut.
