At the beginning of each season, most PGA Tour players create a list of objectives. Tony Finau does not stand out.
Finau's only distinction is that, in contrast to many of his contemporaries, he isn't concerned with keeping details a secret until the end of the season.
After winning the Rocket Mortgage Classic by five strokes at Detroit Golf Club on Sunday evening, Finau highlighted a couple of his season-long objectives. He was able to accomplish one of these goals.
Before every season, I write out my goals, Finau remarked. "Overnight, I was able to sneak a glimpse at them. One of my objectives for this season is to win many tournaments. That is a tremendous accomplishment.
Finau not only succeeded in his objective, but he also achieved so in two separate competitions. Finau won the 3M Open by three strokes last week.
The 32-year-old Finau, who has doubled his career wins on the Tour in just two weeks while shooting a combined 43 under, remarked, "I guess I've been quoted saying it many times before, a week can alter your life." Back-to-back weeks have, I guess, transformed my life when you look at mine, and it's a beautiful feeling.
Naturally, Finau still has unfinished business from his list of objectives. Finau aspires to be selected for a Ryder Cup or Presidents Cup team each year. After his second victory in as many weeks, he should move up from his current sixth ranking, which is just on the automatic selection cutoff, this season because he opted to do so on points rather than a captain's decision.
Finau, who has been on three Cup teams, including the 2019 U.S. Presidents Cup team, said: "I think everybody deserves their spot to some extent, but I honestly want to earn my spot by getting enough points to qualify for the team this year." I still have a few tournaments left to prove myself.
Winning the FedExCup is another major priority. Although Finau is still well behind No. 1 Scottie Scheffler in terms of points, more are on the line at the first two playoff events, and there is also the staggered start at the Tour's conclusion at East Lake. Finau is predicted to rise to seventh in points.
To put it another way, Finau is still in the running to win the $18 million prize given to the FedExCup champion.
His earnings over the past two Sundays, totaling about $2.9 million, aren't terrible either.
Finau responded to how he intended to exploit his recent gains: "I haven't thought about it. But now that you mention it, five kids will easily take care of it.
My wife and my five children will probably know how to spend it.
