Toronto: Tony Finau birdied the 18th hole on Saturday to share the RBC Canadian Open lead with defending champion Rory McIlroy at 8-under 62.
Finau remarked, "I can't complete the way I wanted yesterday, and I guess all that did was put a fire in my belly to get it with it today." That's what I did. I hit a few birdies and played an immaculate game of golf.
McIlroy stated, "I'm just thrilled to give myself a shot, to be in the final group." When I first saw Tony, I believe he was on a 10 or 11 at the time, whereas I was on an 8 or 9. 'Let's just attempt to get yourself into the final group,' I told myself.
Because of the COVID-19 epidemic, which cancelled golf's fourth-oldest competition the previous two years, McIlroy had to endure three years to defend his 2019 title.
At St. George's Golf & Country Club, McIlroy had a 65 to tie Finau at 11-under 199.
Finau gained the accolade of the best round of the week, finishing with four birdies and a bogey on the back nine after eagling the par-5 ninth in front-nine 29. Last season, he won the FedEx Cup playoff opening at Liberty National for his second PGA Tour win.
I knew I was playing well, but on this golf course, you can make a number at any time, remarked Finau. So I'm not going to go ahead of myself. I just wanted to stay as present as possible and put together a solid round from start to finish. Nine under par included PGA champion Justin Thomas (63), Colonial winner Sam Burns (65), Wyndham Clark (68), and Alex Smalley (67).
Thomas eagled the par-5 15th hole.
Thomas stated it was incredible — it was simple. I mean, I just performed incredibly well. I didn't do anything noteworthy. I did not do anything wrong. I took full advantage of a few of the openings in the middle of the course, and I waited for my run to begin.
I started off to a bit of a sluggish start. Clark remarked. I was apprehensive because there were a lot of folks out there who hadn't competed in a while. But then I relaxed and felt pretty comfortable about my performance.
After a 67, Nick Taylor was the highest Canadian at five under.
