The Jaguars
With 11:45 remaining in the fourth quarter, the Jaguars appeared to be in a position to upset the Commanders and begin the Doug Pederson era with a victory after scoring 19 straight points to take a 22-14 lead.
Jacksonville was still in the lead, 22-20, even after Washington scored on Terry McLaurin's 49-yard touchdown reception since the Commanders' two-point attempt was unsuccessful.
Jahan Dotson grabbed the game.
There was still 1:46 left on the clock when Jahan Dotson grabbed the game-winning 24-yard touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter.
With 1:19 remaining, quarterback Trevor Lawrence attempted a late comeback for Jacksonville, but receiver Christian Kirk intercepted his pass.
Lawrence claimed that they intended to continue playing after the game, but for various reasons, they could not do so.
Performed in the first half
As poorly as we performed in the first half, Lawrence mentioned in his press conference that it was nice to have still a chance to win the game in the second half after observing how well we were playing in the third and early half of the fourth quarter. But ultimately, the final result is what counts, not the score at the halfway point of the fourth quarter.
"At this time, I don't have all the solutions. We frequently shoot ourselves in the foot. We can control many things, but we didn't do a very good job. We must play more shrewdly at every point throughout the board. There are numerous things we need to work on.
Lawrence responded, "It's always the same emotion," when asked how the locker room for the 2022 Jaguars differs from the previous year following a defeat.
The Jaguars will host the Colts.
"When you enter after dropping a game, you let it all hang out. Lawrence added that everyone is upset and frustrated when you don't finish, especially in a tight situation. "You worked extremely hard on this one, and because it's the opening, you worked even more complex for a few weeks. That's why it's frustrating that you dropped it at the very end. There is that feeling of deflation. Then, however, it was encouraging to watch men support and cheer one other on.
"This is merely the initial one. There is an entire season. I genuinely admire the talent and character of the men in that locker room. Although we must make some changes and improvements, I'm not concerned.
In Week Two, the Jaguars will host the Colts. Jacksonville hasn't suffered a home loss to Indianapolis since 2014.
