US Open 2022
Money talks, as always in the world of golf, and the USGA had plenty to talk about this week when CEO Mike Whan announced a significant increase in the 2022 US Open purse on Wednesday. The US Open will pay out $17.5 million to those who made the weekend cut. That is officially the most oversized purse in significant championship history.
Matt Fitzpatrick
Matt Fitzpatrick took advantage of those sky-high bankrolls who won the US Open by one blow over Will Zalatoris and Scottie Scheffler. In doing so, Fitzpatrick claimed a share of the $3.15 million winners, nearly $500,000 more than the Masters and PGA Championship paid respective champions Scottie Scheffler and Justin Thomas ($2.7 million) as part of their contracts. Bags of $15 million.
2021 US Open champion Jon Rahm
2021 US Open champion Jon Rahm took home $2.25 million, making the USGA's year-over-year increase $900,000. Still, the first-place prize wasn't the most extensive paid out this year, as Cameron Smith already took home a record $3.6 million for his win at The Players Championship in March.
US Open prize money increase
The US Open prize money increase was not only good news for those who competed for the national championship, but even those who finished in the top 20 will receive a significant sum. The top 20 finishers will receive more than $200,000 for their trouble tackling The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts.
Let's examine how much the US Open 2022 payouts will be split between the top 60 players.
When golfers tie for a position, their share of the purse is an average of what those competitors would be paid if they were ranked in order. Harris English and Austin Greaser (T61), Grayson Murray (63rd) and Stewart Hagestad-a (64th) will earn less than $36,852.
