Andrew Wiggins' contract
The Warriors want to extend Andrew Wiggins' contract as he enters the last year of it. If a contract renewal for Jordan Poole is not reached by the start of the season, he will become a restricted free agent the following summer. Draymond Green is eligible for a four-year, $138.4 million deal and wants one (the max they can give him).
Bob Myers reiterated this week that he wants to retain all three of those players, all of whom were crucial to the Warriors' drive to a championship last season, but that his desire may be compromised by financial realities. According to Kendra Andrews of ESPN, this is what Myers stated on Thursday:
At a news conference on Thursday, Warriors general manager Bob Myers remarked, "We want all of those guys." "Can we get them all? I'm not sure.
"It depends on how much money there is in the end. What we might end up doing is what they are asking. We are not yet in a position to make those choices. Some of these choices might be made over the next two weeks, while others could be made within the following seven to eight months.
The Warriors made headlines last season by spending more than $350 million in luxury tax and player salaries; this season, they'll be in a similar ballpark. Even with the new Chase Center as a cash cow, Warriors co-owner Joe Lacob has stated that this is not a team that can spend $400 million. Some costs are fixed, like Stephen Curry's maximum $215.4 contract extension. For a few more years, Klay Thompson is at the top of his game.
The Warriors and Green are forced to make a decision
They can't let Poole leave because, together with Jonathan Kuminga, Moses Moody, and perhaps Jonathan Wiseman, he is a key component of Golden State's future. In the postseason the previous year, Wiggins was the Warriors' second-best player. This has given rise to some conjecture that Green might be the outlier, which Myers has refuted. Green has a $25.7 million player option for next season, but it's anticipated that he won't exercise it. The Warriors and Green are forced to make a decision.
There must be a sacrifice made, but the Myers and the Warriors are willing to put off making that sacrifice until next summer in order to reunite for this campaign and pursue another championship.
