The headline, as mentioned above, is correct. In Round 2 of the US Open, Rory McIlroy made a remarkable double-bogey save at the par-4 third hole.
McIlroy whiffed on his third shot after hitting his second into knee-high heather. While playing competitor Xander Schauffele's next shot, he attempted to relax and then repeated his attempt from the junk. McIlroy squandered another opportunity.
With his sixth shot, he eventually got away, but he was left with 23 feet for double bogey. He also miraculously converted the save.
McIlroy began the hole at three-under-par, one stroke behind the leader. At one under, he left three players behind.
He commented after his round, "It's one of the best double bogeys I've ever made."
McIlroy made up for those missed shots in spades. He scored five birdies and two bogeys to shoot 1-under 69 and finish the day at four under par, one shot behind the leader.
