Garoppolo expressed his desire for it on Thursday
When it comes to how his quarterback handles the offence, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan has a well-established and well-deserved reputation for having clear, strict, and explicit standards. Jimmy Garoppolo, a starter turned backup turned starter, made some startling comments earlier this week about feeling less constrained in his most recent time at the controls.
Garoppolo specifically remarked that he felt like it was 2017 again following Sunday's victory over the Seahawks, a season in which he felt more liberated to throw the ball anywhere on the field. On Thursday, he was questioned over those comments.
Garoppolo expressed his desire for it on Thursday. Yes, there are clearly many factors involved, but I enjoy performing that kind of work. In 2017, there was a sense of freedom between me, the receivers, and the tight ends. A challenging offence is created when you combine that with offensive talent and a quarterback.
Shanahan was questioned over Garoppolo's remarks on Friday.
You'd have to ask him to clarify, Shanahan told the press. You can query him on it because there was no distinction between that game and any other game. It was probably just a matter of getting in when the game plan was intended for someone else, coming off, and just winging it. That's my best guess, however, it appears that he should ask that.
Later on, in Friday's news conference, a question regarding whether Shanahan was shocked by Garoppolo's willingness to be candid about his preferences was posed.
Shanahan replied, "No, I actually don't know the quote that he stated. I spend a lot of time with Jimmy, so nothing really surprises me. He and I get to speak every day. You folks just stated it, and I can hear your huge interpretations of that quote. I fail to understand it. Just go ask him what he meant by that as I interpret it based on our relationship every day.
When pressed about the matter once more, Shanahan was prepared to leave.
You can, but I won't waste my time on it, Shanahan replied. "I have some serious work to do."
Oh, Kyle. Don't be so irritable. Simply carrying out their duties, reporters. That is the actual work that they do.
