Lamar Jackson, the quarterback for the Ravens, recently asserted during a news conference that a new contract must be signed by Week One. So when does the window of opportunity close?
The Ravens and Jackson are either past the cutoff or very close to it, given that the Broncos and Russell Wilson made their selection at midnight on September 1st.
We're going to start by assuming that Jackson has made it plain to the team that Week One is the deadline and that the Ravens are prepared to respond appropriately. What if they grant him his requests by Week Five? Will he object?
If there is a deadline, it will probably be at the start of the Jets' game in Week 1. The game will soon get started in earnest with preparations. When it comes time to drill, watch the video, and otherwise get ready to go, Lamar, the agent, will have even less time than he did throughout training camp and the preseason to negotiate on behalf of Lamar, the quarterback.
Whatever the deadline, the goals should be: (1) provide Baltimore's best offer; and (2) fairly weigh the advantages and disadvantages of accepting or rejecting the offer. The greatest way to accomplish those objectives would be with the aid of an effective agent.
Take a look at the different organizations in recent years that have rewarded their franchise quarterbacks. Owners typically have a good sense of when to unlock the vault. Kirk Cousins was never regarded by Washington appropriately (or, as some Vikings supporters would put it, just right), and Dallas believed it could make Dak Prescott accept less by being apologetic. Otherwise, organizations and players know when a major offer should be made.
The Ravens might be risking their safety. If so, they did not gain any insight from their encounter with Joe Flacco ten years ago. In either case, a deal isn't finalized, and it's difficult to see that occurring without Jackson engaging an agency.
