The draw will divide 32 teams into eight groups of four. During the standoff, UEFA selects one team from each of the four pots to form the four teams from each clan.
Eredivisie champions Ajax entered Pot 1.
Since Real Madrid is the champion of Spain (one of the top 6 countries) and holder of the UEFA Champions League, the Pot 1 idea for the champions of Spain is assigned to the next best country in the coefficient bar. In this case, the Dutch and reigning Eredivisie champions Ajax entered Pot 1.
Positions 2, 3, and 4 are based on the UEFA Club Coefficient List, a mathematical formula used to assess a particular club's performance in domestic and continental competition over the past five years.
One club is chosen from each pairing to form eight groups of four teams. Clubs from the same country cannot be placed in the same clan and must be drawn to the next appropriate clan.
The first pot contains the winners of the UEFA Champions League (Real Madrid) and the Europa League (Eintracht Frankfurt).
