The PGA Tour Rookie of the Year award is a lock for Cameron Young.
The 25-year-old Wake Forest alumnus confirmed it this past weekend at the Rocket Mortgage Classic at Detroit Golf Club, where he shot 65-68 to tie for second.
Young tied for second place with the runners-up in both The Open and the Genesis Invitational, while one of his two T-3 finishes came at the PGA Championship, another major. Young has outperformed other rookies to the point where he started the week with 203 OWGR points, or around 107 more than Sahith Theegala, who was previously regarded as Young's primary ROY rival.
On Monday, Young will rise to No. 17 in the world rankings.
Most people would view Young's first season on Tour as a rousing success based on his resume. But a young person has a different perspective.
One week remains before the FedExCup Playoffs, and when asked Sunday how he would sum up his season, Young responded, "I don't know, it's a hard question" (Young is projected to move to ninth in points after finishing five shots shy of RMC winner Tony Finau).
If I said it was simple, I'd be lying to do nothing but observe other people succeed. Tony beat us all today, but it's not nice to get that close so much and not have one.
Naturally, I've been closer to winning some of them than others; I've lost by one and by four or five a few times.
Overall, I believe it's fantastic since it demonstrates that I can at least put myself there. However, it is undoubtedly disappointing not to have one yet.
