ARDMORE, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — As the Americans won the Curtis Cup for the third time in a row, top-ranked amateur Rose Zhang set the tone by routing Women's British Amateur champion Louise Duncan, and Rachel Heck capped a new week at Merion.
Going into the eighth Sunday singles, the Americans were leading 8 1/2 – 3 1/2 and needed only two matches to win the cup. They won seven, outscoring their opponents 15 1/2 to 4 1/2.
We were not only representing ourselves, but we were also representing our country and each other by being a part of this fantastic team and coming out with a team win, Zhang said.
This victory, I believe, exemplifies our friendship as well as our incredible abilities. It couldn't have come to a better conclusion.
Since the amateur matches against the Great Britain and Ireland team began in 1932, the Americans have expanded their series lead to 31-8-3.
Rachel Kuehn stated, "It testifies to the depth of our team." We have eight highly skilled players on our team.
Zhang, the No. 1 female amateur in the world, took advantage of Duncan's errors early on, winning four of the first six holes with par. The Scot could never come up, as Zhang won the first set 7 to 5.
Emilia Migliaccio overcame Annabel Fuller in the sixth match with only 13 holes. The games immediately followed, Zhang, Kuehn and Heck won in 17 holes, and the rout was already underway.
When the 2020 bouts were postponed one year due to the coronavirus outbreak, the Americans won by five points in Wales last year.
For the first time since 1986, GB&I was attempting to win on American territory. In 1994, a tie in Tennessee allowed GB&I to retain their title as defending champions.
In 2024, the Curtis Cup will be held at Sunningdale in Ascot, England.
Emily Price of England handed Amari Avery her first loss of the week in the final match.
Price believes Amari is one of the top players in the world, let alone in the United States. I came out today intending to stick to my processes, which I did, and I played exceptionally well.
