According to Tiger Woods, he will not be participating in the U.S. Open next week for health reasons.
Woods stated that he plans to compete in two tournaments next month: the Open Championship at St. Andrews and the JP McManus Pro-Am in Ireland on July 4-5.
A round into the third round of the PGA Championship on May 21, Woods withdrew due to obvious discomfort in his surgically repaired right leg. This is the first time he has withdrawn from a big tournament in his professional career.
With only a three-week gap between the second and third majors of the season, Woods decided to skip the U.S. Open. He stated he had already informed the USGA of his choice when he announced it on Tuesday.
Woods, a three-time U.S. Open champion, has only played his national title four times since 2013 due to a series of ailments. During that time, he has missed three cuts and is now tied for 21st place (2019). In 1999, Woods was part of the U.S. team that rallied on the final day to reclaim the U.S. Open champion at the Country Club. He has been a member of just one winning American team.
It's no surprise that Woods is gearing up for the St. Andrews Open. He indicated he was determined to participate in the 150th Open, even though his fate for the following two majors was dubious after a 47th-place result at the Masters. He's won twice at St. Andrews in 2000 and 2005, and the flat, links surface will be easier to walk than Augusta National or Southern Hills.
I'm looking forward to getting back out there shortly! He sent out a tweet.
Despite his positive comments about his progress, Woods appeared to be in a lot of pain during the PGA Championship. He battled back to make his second consecutive big cut — no small effort given his ailments. However, he withdrew after shooting a 79 in the third round. He was 21 strokes behind the leader after 54 holes.
This year, Woods has only shot under par in two of the seven major tournaments he has played, and he is a cumulative 25 over par.
