Major League Baseball has retired 42 in recognition of Jackie Robinson's revolutionary achievements.
Wayne Gretzky, a legendary goal scorer and the face of hockey, has had his No. 99 retired across the National Hockey League.
Should Bill Russell's No. 6 be retired throughout the NBA in memory of the 11-time champion and civil rights leader who passed away this weekend?
Magic Johnson, a different hall of Famer from the sport, concurs.
Although Russell was present to present Stephen Curry with the NBA Finals MVP award this year, does that go far enough?
With articles by Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated and Dan Woike of The Los Angeles Times, there is a growing consensus in favor of retiring Russell's No. 6. Tyson Chandler, who sports the No. 6 in remembrance of Russell, and Marc Stein discussed the concept for Sub stack in their conversation.
Chandler commented I understand when someone wants one of their numbers retired. In my opinion, the champion of champions would be the right individual.
But I also believe it's lovely to see athletes like myself wear the number in his honor and make an effort to channel any inspiration we may have received from watching him, or in my case, studying, for that matter.
Russell is a Hall of Fame player on the court, where his effect may have been even more significant than Jackie Robinson's was off the court. Not only did sports figures pay tribute to him after his demise, but three US presidents also were moved to say how much they loved and admired the guy.
Russell is the NBA player who most merits this title. It is an intriguing notion and seems appropriate as a tribute. On these adjustments, Commissioner Adam Silver and the NBA frequently proceed slowly (and they will not do anything while people are still mourning). Silver is not prone to rash judgments; instead, she works to forge an agreement.
But how much more deal must be reached before Russell's No. 6 is retired? There are many supporters, so it isn't easy to see anyone attempting to obstruct the move.
Although it won't happen right now, there is a growing movement in favour of retiring Russell's No. 6 across the league.
Nobody in NBA history deserves the distinction more.
