In the $500,000 Grade 1 Fourstardave Handicap on Saturday at Saratoga Race Course, can the only female in the field defeat the male competitors? It has occurred before and is likely to do so once more.
The Fourstardave is one of North America's most prominent one-mile grass events. The Breeders' Cup Mile winners with the most victories over the previous ten years are Wise Dan (2012 and 2013), Tourist (2016), and World Approval (2012 and 2013). (2017). It makes sense that the Fourstardave qualifies for the FanDuel Breeders' Cup Mile with a "Win and You're In" outcome.
Since the Fourstardave was promoted to the Grade 1 level in 2016, a talented group of fillies and mares have raced in the race with impressive outcomes.
In the Fourstardave in 2019, Got Stormy and Uni finished first and third, respectively. Later that year, Got Stormy and Uni finished first and second in the Breeders' Cup Mile. In the Fourstardave in 2020, Got Stormy finished second and Uni seventh. In the same race in 2021, Got Stormy won again, narrowly beating out Blowout and Daddy Is a Legend, who placed fourth and fifth, respectively.
Five horses in a modest but capable group have been drawn for the 2022 Fourstardave. The six-year-old mare #3 Regal Glory stands out from the other four graded stakes winners and two Grade 1 winner.
Regal Glory has won stakes every year since 2018 and has been particularly successful recently.

Regal Glory won the Just a Game by 3 1/2 lengths over Wakanaka and In Italian, the winner of the Grade 1 Dance Smartly Stakes (next-out winner of the Grade 1 Diana Stakes). It is safe to state that Regal Glory has been authoritatively defeating tough opposition, establishing her credentials as, without a doubt, the horse to beat in the Fourstardave.
Who are the other leading candidates? We must undoubtedly respect Regal Glory's hot stablemate, #4 Masen, who has won three straight races since arriving in the country and is one win away from a perfect record. Following a tight loss in the Grade 1 Maker's Mark Mile Stakes at Keeneland, Masen headed to Belmont Park and racked up victories in the Grade 3 Poker Stakes and the Seek Again Stakes, both one-mile races.
#1 After battling back vigorously to win the Grade 1 Jaipur Stakes by sprinting three-quarters of a mile at Belmont two months ago, Casa Creed is another horse expected to draw betting interest. Despite placing third in the Fourstardave's 2021 and 2020 runs, Casa Creed has performed best when sprinting the final seven-eighths of a mile.
The outstanding sprinter #2 Front Run the Fed, who won the Van Clief Stakes at Colonial Downs to start 2022, can be compared to it in many ways. In the Fourstardave, Front Run, the Fed will try to extend his deep-closing approach over a longer distance than average as he is only 1-for-5 in one-mile races.
#5 completes the field. Get Smokin is a quick gelding that typically leads the pack. In his last race, the Grade 3 Arlington Stakes, which was run over 1 1/16 miles at Churchill Downs, he nearly led from start to finish. He nearly led from start to finish in his most memorable triumph, the Grade 2 Hill Prince Stakes, which was run over a mile at Belmont Park in 2020.
Get Smokin has the potential to shake loose on an easy lead and linger around for a top-three finish because it is the only true front-runner in the Fourstardave competition.
How should we wager on the Fourstardave then? We anticipate Chad Brown's horses Regal Glory and Masen to finish one and two, respectively. We'll use Casa Creed and Get Smokin equally for third and fourth place.
