Chris Folk spent nearly his entire professional hockey career in Europe after being drafted by the Minnesota Wild in the 2009 NHL draft.
Former Minnesota Wild rookie Kris Foucault has considered joining the Canadian Coast Guard if his hockey career doesn't pan out. While that career option has yet to materialize and the 31-year-old continues to play professional hockey in Europe, he has nothing to keep fit and maintain his Coast Guard ambitions.
"As hockey players, we have to do our best. "For me, I'm an older player. I'm 31 years old, and staying fit and being able to swim have kept my career going. I thank my coaches for preparing me for hockey. Be prepared and be prepared for other situations."
Years of preparation paid off when he rescued a 6-year-old girl from drowning on May 10 while vacationing with her family in Nassau, Bahamas.
Foucault goes into more detail about how the fateful afternoon unfolded, explaining how he noticed a powerful current pushing the young woman into the water. She chased him without hesitation and safely brought him and her back to shore.

The left-winger, who spent last season in Germany's top professional league, the left-winger approached the Deutsches Hockey League (DEL) but feared it might be too late. He was unconscious, his lips were bluish, and a brown and white liquid flowed from his mouth and nose.
"As I was running through the waves, I saw her lifeless body floating on top about 50 feet in front of me," he told us. "I thought she was just retrieving a body."
When Foucault reached the shore, he lowered the girl, and a lifeguard turned her over, and she spat out the liquid. After CPR, the girl regained consciousness and cried in her mother's arms. They took her to the hospital, but Foucault hasn't heard from her.
"I miss what happened when we got to land because I just lay down," Foucault said. "I'm out of breath, and I need a break.".
"It's the team aspect of hockey," he said. "If your
teammates are in trouble, you try to help. [On
Cabbage Beach], someone has a problem, and I thought I could help.
Foucault only played once in the
NHL, on
February 14, 2012, against the
Anaheim Ducks in a
Wilds sweater. He has played in Europe since scoring
12 goals and
28 points in
24 appearances for
Iserlohn this season before suffering an upper-body injury. He had surgery to repair a torn labrum in March and had just resumed swimming a week ago because of a feeling of caution in his shoulder.
