DETROIT (AP) — After urinating in a drain, a prominent Detroit Red Wings Zamboni driver claimed he was fired.
Two months after being fired from the Red Wings after 51 years with the franchise, Al Sobotka filed a discrimination complaint against Olympia Entertainment. His attorney claims he has a medical condition that causes him to urinate frequently.
Sobotka, 68, couldn't find a restroom, so he urinated in a gutter that carries ice runoff from the Zamboni machines at Little Caesars Arena. Someone supposedly noticed him in February and reported him.
Due to a legal matter, Olympia Entertainment refuses to respond.
According to Gordon, management was aware of Sobotka's prostate problem.
Sobotka said he was "shocked" when he was fired, "I didn't know what to say," she said, "yes, I'm heartbroken.
In addition to driving the Zamboni at Red Wings games, Sobotka was known for retrieving octopus thrown on the ice by fans, a Detroit tradition at Olympia Stadium, Joe Louis Arena, and now Little Caesars Arena. The audience exploded in cheers as he swirled the sea animals above his head.
According to Gordon, management was aware of Sobotka's prostate problem.
According to a TV channel, Sobotka was "shocked" when he was sacked. "I was at a loss for words." "Yes, I'm devastated."
