Ashley Cain and Timothy LeDuc, Olympic pairs figure skaters for the United States, are retiring from competition.
"For the time being, we're saying goodbye to the competitive part of skating," LeDuc said in a joint social media video.
In January, Cain, 26, and LeDuc, 32, won their second national title, and in February, they finished eighth at the Beijing Olympics.
They finished second in the short programme at the world championships in March, but Cain fell three times during the free skate, forcing them to withdraw. She laid on the ice after the previous fall, was attended to by LeDuc, and then was helped to her feet before being carried away on a stretcher and transferred to a hospital for evaluation.
LeDuc is the first publicly non-binary athlete to battle in an Olympic Winter Games.
Cain and LeDuc both stated that they would coach skaters. Cain also stated that she plans to compete professionally in shows. They'll attempt to put on ice shows together.
Cain remarked, "I'm very grateful to have spent the last six years by your side." "Together, we were able to accomplish all of our objectives."
Jessica Calalang and Brian Johnson, both silver medalists for the United States, disbanded their partnership two months earlier, with Johnson announcing his retirement.
The top returning U.S. couple heading into next season is Alexa Knierim and Brandon Frazier, who won the world title despite the top teams from Russia and China.
