Mike Riley, coach of the year for the Generals
In a sad loss, the New Jersey Generals began their campaign. Since then, they haven't lost a game.
Head coach Mike Riley, who led his team to a 9-1 regular-season record and the top seed in the USFL playoffs, deserves credit for the Generals' resiliency following the 28-24 loss to Birmingham in Week 1. Riley has already received recognition for his accomplishments by being elected the USFL Coach of the Year for 2022.
Riley, a former defensive back for Alabama who went on to have a long coaching career, took to the USFL with an infectious passion that permeated his club. Riley held head coaching roles in college (Oregon State, Nebraska), the Canadian Football League (Winnipeg), and the NFL (Chargers).
Riley, who is known for molding quarterbacks, made the Generals a rushing squad, with Trey Williams coming in at number two and Darius Victor at number three in terms of rushing yards this year.
On the path to winning the North Division, he expertly used a two-quarterback offense, making the most of the complementary skills of Luis Perez and De'Andre Johnson.
